Al and Wendy Newell and team have had a tremendous impact on our Operation
Christmas Child volunteer program. Al's leadership has helped us recruit,
train, and equip thousands of volunteers around the country and encouraged
an environment where they can grow in their relationship with Christ and be
more effective for our ministry of blessing millions of children worldwide.
Their training programs provide outstanding organizational and motivational
support for every aspect of volunteer ministry.

When I first learned that our church was going to have a volunteer ministry, my thoughts turned to a couple of decades of working with unenthusiastic, semicompetent laypeople who had been drafted into insignificant roles (where at least the damage they would do could be contained). Volunteer ministry? Why bother?
But, people that I knew and loved had been through training in High Impact Volunteer Ministry, and they seemed quite excited, so I was open to giving it a whirl.
Within two or three hours of the beginning of the training, I came to be convinced that for years I had missed, quite entirely, that which is perhaps the greatest discipleship venue available to the modern-day body of Christ. I had fallen into the trap of thinking that volunteers did the grunt work while leaders made disciples. I had failed to grasp the fundamental truth that our volunteers are some of our greatest potential disciples. That is, working with volunteers is disciple-making.
Now, some two years into our church's relationship with Newell and Associates, and thus about two years into the implementation of the High Impact model for Volunteer Ministry, it does not overstate the case to say that the DNA of our church has been and is being changed. There is a grassroots revival of Spirit-led servanthood. Nobody is drafted or guilted into a ministry role anymore. We just don't allow it, and, in fact, we're ashamed that we ever did. Every ministry role (whether employee or volunteer) is understood and fulfilled in light of its eternal significance. The bar for service is higher than it's ever been, and serving as a volunteer is increasingly and unapologetically seen as a demanding, rewarding, significant and spiritual experience. As we progress in our implementation of High Impact principles, we are making more disciples in more settings than ever before.
God has gifted Al and Wendy Newell, and those who serve alongside them, to capture and articulate that which I now believe to be a part of the original vision for the church. It is simply a blueprint for implementing Romans 12. I can't think of a reason that any church would not be blessed to consider taking a good, hard look at High Impact Volunteer Ministry.

My desire and our ministry need was to move from being a volunteer-friendly organization to one that was volunteer-dependent. Knowing we would never be able to employ enough people to meet the growing demand for our services, such a move was vital for our long-term viability. And we needed to change our paradigm so that staff became multipliers of ministry vs. the sole do-ers. We selected Newell and Associates and the High Impact Model as the vehicle for accomplishing this shift. We initially sent our executive team to Level One training and have since brought their team on-site to train our entire staff. The results have exceeded our expectations.
